The name Panzer 38(t), comes from the year of introduction into the Czech army (1938) and the (t) is the German identifier for a Czechoslovakian made vehicle. The Panzer 38(t) served throughout the war in various forms finding useful applications even in 1945. The Flakpanzer 38(t) was one. In 1942\/43 enemy airpower was becoming more significant on the Russian front and in North Africa. One solution was to provide units with integral anti-aircraft defenses. The Flakpanzer 38(t) was created as part of the solution and became ready and was issued to units in Jan\/Feb 1944. It served on both the Russian front and in the West against the British and US forces after they landed at Normandy. 48 Flakpanzer 38(t) anti-aircraft tanks served in Italy with the Hermann Göring Panzer Division, 26.
