Hanayama Difficulty Level 6 – The hardest!

The puzzle is called Infinity not only for its appearance but also because its movement continues endlessly until the pieces are taken apart.

It looks like the sign for Infinity, like a horizontal 8. There are three pieces to the puzzle.  One piece is the frame like the horizontal 8 and the other two pieces are like the eyes inside each half of the 8.  Solving this puzzle will entertain you for hours even though it looks simple.

Designed by Finish designer Vesa Timonen.  Vesa has designed many puzzles for Hanayama of different levels from The Loop rated Level 1 (and still surprisingly tricky!) to Cylinder, Dial, Donut & Keyhole all rated Level 4, and the Square, another very hard level 6 puzzle. Vesa used computer programming to optimise the solution so that there would be as many moves as possible. It just happened that the longest such puzzle was n-ary. This puzzle needs 30+ moves in order to solve it but Vesa also had another version needing 70+ moves. Vesa says he was actually happy that Hanayama selected the simpler one as it is difficult enough. We agree with that and they did give it a 6/6 difficulty rating!

So what is an n-ary puzzle? 
Think of the solution to the puzzle having a series of moves that can be in either of two states – on/off or like in computing binary code 1 or 0. Then think about other puzzles that might have three states in the solution like the famous Tower of Hanoi; moving the disks between three poles in a repeatable pattern to solve. Some puzzles might have even more states and we would call those n-ary puzzles.
